Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. He was one of eight children in the Jackson family. Michael first began his career in music as a member of the Jackson 5, alongside his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon.
In 1971, Michael began his solo career while at Motown Records. His 1979 album Off the Wall was a huge success, and includes some of Michael’s most well-known songs such as “Beat It” and “Billie Jean”. With his follow-up album Thriller (1982), Michael became a household name and is now considered one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Michael continued to create hit albums and songs such as Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (1995).
In 2009, while preparing for his comeback tour This Is It, Michael died from an overdose of propofol. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His honors include 15 Grammy Awards, 6 Brit Awards, a Golden Globe Award and 39 Guinness World Records.
