Kanye Omari West was born on July 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia. Kanye is most famous for being an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. He first gained widespread attention in the early 2000s as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records. West is also known for his controversial behavior, as well as his outspoken views on politics, race, and culture.
Kanye West was born and raised in a middle-class family. His mother, Donda C. (Williams) West, was a professor of English at Clark Atlanta University and the head of the English department. Kanye’s father, Ray West, a former Black Panther, was a photojournalist. The family later relocated to Chicago, Illinois.
Kanye West attended high school at Polaris High School in suburban Oak Lawn, Illinois. He later enrolled at The American Academy of Art on a painting scholarship before attending Chicago State University to study English.
West began his music career in the early 1990s, as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records. He later gained recognition as a solo artist with his debut album The College Dropout (2004), which was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His 2005 follow-up album. College Dropout was eventually certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
Kanye has also been involved in various philanthropic activities. In 2008, he founded the nonprofit organization The Dr. Donda West Foundation, which focuses on creative content development.
