Sodalite is a blue crystal that can be found in many different places around the world. It is often used in jewelry and other decorative items. But can sodalite go in water? And if so, what are the best ways to cleanse and care for it? In this article, we will explore these questions and more.

So, let me just give you the quick question to whether we should expose our sodalite to water or not, then I can go into more detail later.

Due to sodalite’s chemical make-up, it is not recommended to put this crystal in water. Not only will its relatively low Mohs rating (5.5-6) lead to a higher probability of it breaking, it can also become toxic. This is why ingesting water that comes into contact with sodalite is not recommended.

That’s really just an overview and you should know more about exactly how you CAN use water on sodalite in certain circumstances. So feel free to read on for all of the information you need.

What Is Sodalite?

What is sodalite?

Sodalite is a mineral that is found with nepheline and other feldspathoid minerals. It is usually translucent, has a vitreous luster, and has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6. Sodalite often has white veining and can be confused with the more desirable lapis lazuli.

Sodalite is a mineral that is found in igneous rocks, as well as in veins and fractures within those rocks. It is also found in contact with metamorphic rocks, where it forms in response to the heat and pressure of the new environment. In its natural form, sodalite is usually massive, meaning it has no definite shape, and it breaks easily with a conchoidal fracture. Well-formed crystals of sodalite are rare.

Sodalite can be used as a gemstone and is often seen in jewelry. It is a less expensive alternative to lapis lazuli. Possibly the most popular use of Sodalite is in the form of cabochons, beads, and tumbled stones. They look very pretty and are nice to own.

These gems are very affordable so they aren’t going to put you out of pocket. The only limitation on sodalite’s use in jewelry is its hardness (5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale). If mounted in a ring or worn as a bracelet, you’ll soon find that sodalite scratches easily. So, this is why you are much more likely to see this stone used in other jewelry, such as earrings or pendants as they will be knocked about less and preserve the sodalite longer.

Quick Sodalite facts:

-Sodalite is a mineral that is usually blue to blue-violet in color

-It is found with nepheline and other feldspathoid minerals

-Sodalite can be hard to find in finished jewelry because it varies so much in appearance

-Sodalite is a good alternative gem for lapis lazuli because it is less expensive

-Sodalite has a hardness of 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and is best used in earrings, pins, or pendants.

-Sodalite is usually sourced from Russia, Greenland, and the United States among other places.

Over the centuries, humanity has found that sodalite can have several very beneficial effects on our lives. Here are some of the most popular sodalite uses:

1. Sodalite for Communication

If you’re looking to improve your communication skills, whether it be in business or personal relationships, then sodalite can give you a major boost. This is because sodalite is closely associated with the Throat Chakra, which is the chakra of communication. Wearing sodalite jewelry or keeping a piece of sodalite in your pocket can help to clear any blockages you have in your Throat Chakra, and allow you to communicate more effectively.

2. Sodalite for Meditation

Sodalite is also an excellent stone for meditation, as it promotes peace and tranquility. If you’re new to meditation, sodalite can be a great stone to help you get started, as it will allow you to reach a deep meditative state more easily. Sodalite is also said to enhance your psychic abilities, so if you’re looking to develop your intuition, this is the perfect stone for you.

3. Sodalite for Healing

Sodalite is known as a “healing crystal”, as it has many beneficial properties that can help to heal the mind, body, and soul. Sodalite can help to relieve stress and anxiety, as well as having a positive effect on blood pressure. It can also help to boost the immune system, combat insomnia, fevers, and treat digestive disorders.

4. Sodalite for Protection

Sodalite is also a great stone for protection, as it can help to shield you from negative energy and vibes. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, carrying a piece of sodalite with you can help to restore balance and provide a sense of protection.

5. Sodalite for Wisdom

Sodalite is also known for its nurturing effect on, well, our wisdom. It helps to promote clarity of thought and intuition. Is sodalite safe to put in water

Will sodalite go in water

When it comes to caring for our healing crystals, there is one key factor that determines how much we expose them to water, the Mohs hardness scale.

When a stone can be easily scratched or damaged, it becomes much more susceptible to water damage. Sodalite is a 5.5-6 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it can be scratched by quartz and other stones of equal or greater hardness.

Sodalite should never be left to soak in water for more than an hour or so as this will greatly increase its risk of damage. Saltwater should be avoided at all costs and even a moon water cleansing is inadvisable. Washing this stone under the faucet is possible as long as it’s dried afterward.

Now, am I being extra cautious with this advice? Yes. Your Sodalite crystal will not dissolve in the first water bath you give it, but over time these simple rituals will degrade the stone and lead to damage or a loss of luster.

As there are so many other ways to cleanse and charge your Sodalite (sunlight, smudging, placing in a geode, using Selenite, etc) there is really no need to put this stone in water.

So the answer to Can Sodalite go in water? is a resounding NO!

The sodalite crystal is not going to completely dissolve in water, but it can easily start to crack and fracture. This could release some of the aluminum-based compounds within the stone. Unfortunately, these can be extremely harmful when consumed by humans.

Therefore, Crystal elixirs made with sodalite should be avoided at all costs due to the possible toxic compounds which can be released when they are submerged in water. It’s not recommended to put them in drinking water or even to risk placing them in bathing water for this reason.

Sodalite is certainly safe to handle and can have many benefits in your day-to-day life, but when it comes to drinking or bathing in water infused with the stone, it is best to err on the side of caution.

Can you use sodalite in the bath?

Can you use sodalite in the bath

Sodalite is such a fantastic and versatile healing crystal, but this is one that you should probably leave out of your bathing rituals.

As Sodalite has such a low Mohs hardness rating (5.5-6) it is more prone to damage when placed in warm bathwater. It will also be more susceptible to bathing salts and cosmetic products you might want to use. There is also a risk of toxins being released if the crystal breaks down in the water.

As I covered above, it’s a safe crystal to use when used right. I don’t personally infuse my bath water with sodalite but you can certainly have this stone in the bathroom itself.

Just place it on a windowsill or shelf where it won’t come in contact with any water and it will be perfectly safe. Enjoy the stone’s benefits while you’re taking a shower instead!

Will salt water harm sodalite?

When cleaning sodalite, it’s best to avoid using saltwater. Salt can be corrosive and can damage the surface of the stone over time. This is because sodalite is a rather soft stone when compared to other popular healing crystals.

When it comes to sodalite, I would strongly urge you to avoid using saltwater and opt for another cleansing method instead. That being said, using dry salt is okay as long as you’re gentle and avoid using too much pressure.

Another option for cleansing sodalite is smudging. This can be done with a number of different herbs, such as sage, sweetgrass, or cedar. I like to use a blend of sage and sweetgrass because it’s grounding and helps to remove any negative energy. Cedar is also a great option as it’s cleansing and uplifting.

How to clean sodalite

how to clean sodalite Crystals safely

Sodalite can be cleaned in a number of ways. One way is to hold it under running water for a minute or two. This will remove any negative energy and dirt that has built up.

If the sodalite is looking grubby, you can use an old toothbrush to give it a good scrub. Make sure that it’s a soft toothbrush and that it is clean first. If you don’t have a handy toothbrush, you can use a microfiber cloth instead.

Another way to clean crystals is with soap and water. Make sure that the water is lukewarm. I usually like to use ecological soap on my crystals too, but you may want to omit that with softer stones like sodalite. This will remove any dirt or grime that might be on them.

Once you have lightly scrubbed them, make sure to rinse them off properly.

How to cleanse sodalite

How to cleanse sodalite crystals effectively

There are many ways to cleanse your crystals, but here are some of the most effective methods that I’ve personally used over the years:

Using salt to cleanse sodalite

Early on in our history, humans discovered that salt can act as a natural spiritual cleanser. It’s great at drawing out negative energy, and it can be used on any type of crystal. You can use any type of salt you have available, but if you can get your hands on Himalayan pink salt, it makes the entire ritual just that much fancier. Place your crystals on a bed of salt and let them sit overnight. Give them a good wipe the next morning and store them away for their next use.

Using moonlight to cleanse sodalite

The moon is sacred for many reasons but especially because it is a natural purifier. This makes it perfect for cleansing your crystals. As sodalite is such a brittle stone when compared to others, I wouldn’t recommend using the moon water ritual. Instead, you can place your stone outside or near a window during the next full moon.

Using sunlight to cleanse sodalite

With most crystals, I actually advise against leaving them in sunlight, however, sodalite is a rare exception. Sunlight will activate and enhance the properties of sodalite, making it an excellent stone to use for your intentions. Place your sodalite in direct sunlight for an hour or so. This will help to cleanse it but also avoid causing any damage to its appearance.

Using smudging to cleanse sodalite

This is an age-old technique that uses smoke to cleanse and purify objects and spaces. You can use any type of smudge stick, but sage is a popular choice. Simply light it, let the flame die down a little, and then wave the smoke around your crystal. This will clear away any negative energy and restore it to its natural state.

So basically there are various methods to keep your sodalite crystals buzzing as they should. For me, I tend to chop and change between these methods just to make sure I’m giving my crystals all the help they need to keep helping me.

How to keep your sodalite working for longer?

How to keep your sodalite working for longer

To make sure that your crystals, and especially sodalite, can keep working for you for a long time make sure you do the following:

-keep them dry.

By this I mean, if you cleanse your crystals with water make sure they are dried off afterward. We really shouldn’t be using water with this crystal, but if you’ve needed to give it a quick rinse, be sure to pat it down and set it out to air dry.

-store them in a safe place.

This means, somewhere where they won’t be moved around or touched too much. This will help to keep its energy vibrating at the right frequency. Also, sodalite is one of those stones which will scratch VERY easily. So make sure you don’t have it sitting with other crystals which might also cause some damage.

-check for compatibility.

Before using your sodalite with any other crystals, be sure to do a quick check and see if they are compatible. Some crystals can have a negative effect on each other when used together. If you’re not sure, it’s always best to ask an expert or do some research.

-regular inspection.

This means checking your crystals for any chips, cracks, or other damage. If there is significant damage, I would say its healing days are over but as they are such a beautiful crystal, you could always keep it as a decoration.

So those are my tips for keeping your sodalite crystal working at its best.
