Citrine is a type of quartz that has a beautiful fall hue ranging from pale yellow to reddish-brown. It is commonly associated with traders and those who have found success, and this is why the stone is said to bring prosperity and an abundance mindset. Some people also believe that citrine has healing powers, including spiritual, psychological, and physiological effects.
The question is, how would the stone hold up to a dunking in water?
The citrine crystal is a sturdy one that will not be damaged by washing it or even submerging it in water. In fact, a moon water bath is one of the recommended ways to remove negative energy and rebalance your citrine crystal. Nevertheless, there are some uses of water that should be avoided.
If you want to know a little more about what you can and can’t do with your citrine crystals, then read on.
Can you put a citrine crystal in water?
I wanted to address this question first as it’s one that I get asked a lot. People are often worried, and rightly so, that they can damage certain crystals by putting them in any type of water.
Citrine is a rugged crystal and will not be degraded by regular fresh or tap water. As it has a hardness score of 7 it can be submerged in water and cleaned. It’s not recommended to expose this crystal to saltwater or pool water for extended periods as its color and healing properties will diminish.
So, what I’m saying is that dunking this particular quartz crystal into water is not going to make it crack or dissolve away. In most cases when done correctly, you will have a cleansed, clean and re-energized crystal afterward. However, there is always a risk with submerging any crystal into water, so I’d advise diversifying your cleansing rituals.

9 Things That You Should Do With Your Citrine Crystal To Keep It Energized
I’d like to give you a few tips about what you can and can’t do with your citrine crystal, so let’s start off with some ways you can clean and cleanse your crystal.
Rinse your citrine crystals under a running tap water
A nice simple way to reduce the amount of negative energy in a crystal, as well as the amount of dirt and grime, is to hold it under running tap water.
If you don’t have time to give it a good long soak or try any of the alternative ways to cleanse crystals, then this is a quick and effective way to do it. I see it as a quick top-up to my crystal’s energy and effectiveness.
Wash citrine crystals with warm soapy water
It’s perfectly fine to clean up a citrine crystal with your run-of-the-mill kitchen dish soap. Just take a soft cloth and some warm water, add a little soap to it and give your crystal a good scrub.
There is very little chance that you are going to scratch or damage your crystal with this method, but I always advise using caution and going slowly.
Your main aim here is not to re-energize the crystal, though a good clean does seem to help with getting rid of negative energy attached to the stone. Instead, you are trying to bring back the crystal’s natural shine and remove any build-up of dirt or grime
Cleanse citrine crystals in Moon water
The moon with its beauty and obvious power over our planet is a real ally when it comes to cleaning and cleansing your crystal.
Leaving your citrine crystal to soak in a bath of moon-infused water is a really effective way to get it fully energized. It may take a little more work, but it’s well worth it.
All you have to do is wait until the next full moon period, and then place your crystal in a bowl filled with fresh water. You then place the bowl on your windowsill or even out in your backyard so that it can be bathed in the moonlight.
It doesn’t matter if you want to put a lid on the bowl to keep the water clean (I like to use a simple cloth myself), as long as it is in the light it’ll work.
You can also make additional moon water and store it for later use before the next full moon.
The only thing to be worried about is if you sleep in and forget about the crystal. it really shouldn’t be in direct sunlight for too long and you certainly don’t want it exposed to too much heat.
Clean your citrine crystals with an ultrasonic cleaner

If you don’t want to clean your crystals by hand, another really great alternative is to use an ultrasonic cleaner. These are amazing little devices that create vibrations in water, which help to loosen and remove dirt and grime from surfaces.
I’ve used ultrasonic cleaners on all sorts of things, from jewelry to watches, and they work like a charm every time. Plus, they’re really quick and easy to use so you don’t have to spend a lot of time cleaning your crystals.
Just add some water, place your crystals in the ultrasound cleaner, and hit the button. In a few minutes, your crystals will be good as new.
Avoid this if your crystal has had any repair work on it or was adapted in any way in terms of color. You’d be better off cleaning them by hand in these cases.
Use citrine crystals at in the bath
I’ve always found that baths (or showers) with crystals is a really energizing experience. Your citrine crystal will definitely help to increase the positive vibes in the air.
Now, this isn’t really a good way to cleanse the crystal, but rather a way for you to benefit from it’s energy. So if your crystal is in dire need of a clean, don’t use this method.
For the bath, you can either place the citrine directly in the water with you or put it on the edge of the tub. If you’re worried about dropping it, then I suggest using a small bowl or basket to hold them.
You could even combine this method with the one above and add some moon water to your bathtub. Now that would be an invigorating experience!
Drink citrine infused water
If you really want the positive energy of citrine to literally flow through you, then adding this crystal to a drinking bottle is a good option. If you’ve never tried doing this with crystals, check out these great starter kits on Amazon.
The is very little danger of citrine water harming you as it is part of the quartz family which is a very hard stone (7 on the Mohs scale). The stone will not be damaged by being submerged in the water and it will give you a boost in positive energy.
What I would not advise is to put more than one crystal in your drinking water and especially not two different ones. I’ve personally found that crystals clinking around against each other can sometimes scatter. I also believe that we don’t want to mix different energy fields in our drinking water.
Wear your citrine crystals daily
One of the best ways to use citrine is to have it on your person as much as possible. By wearing a piece of jewelry with a citrine crystal or even carrying it around in your pocket, you can really maximize the benefits of its positive energy.
The great thing about citrine is that it comes in so many different forms, from rings and necklaces to bracelets and earrings. You can even find citrine crystal chips that can be added to a charm bracelet or used in other creative ways.
No matter what you do, make sure that the citrine is in some form of contact with your skin as this will allow the energy to flow more freely. I also like to keep a smaller citrine crystal in my wallet, as these ushers in abundance in that area of my life.

Place citrine crystals in your home
If you’re unable to wear citrine or carry it around with you, then placing it somewhere in your home is the next best thing.
A great place to put citrine is near the front door as it will bring in positive energy and help to keep negative energy out. You can also place it in your office or workspace to promote creativity, motivation, and productivity.
I like to have a few different pieces of citrine around my home, as this allows me to benefit from its positive energy in different areas of my life.
Use dry salt to cleanse your citrine crystals
In addition to submerging or rinsing citrine with water, dried salt is also a great way to cleanse and energize your crystals. You can either use sea salt or rock salt for this, but I would recommend using sea salt as it has higher mineral content.
Whatever salt you choose to use, you can just put it in a bowl and place your crystals on it. The salt will absorb the negative energy from the crystals and help to cleanse them. It’s a great way to store your crystals between use
Be sure to discard the salt after each cleansing and never reuse it.

5 Things You Absolutely Shouldn’t Do With Your Citrine Crystals
Just as there are some things that you can do to extend the useful life of a crystal and keep it working correctly, there are some things I really recommend you avoid doing too.
Avoid washing your crystals with your clothes
It’s not something that most people would do, but sometimes it does happen. Just remember that if you put a citrine crystal in with a high-temperature soak, it will slowly degrade it over time and may lead to a less effective crystal.
What’s more, I have found that the constant tumbling can lead to little cracks and chips coming off the stone. This is especially true if citrine crystals accidentally make it into the dryer too.
Avoid exposing your citrine crystals to saltwater
Contrary to popular belief, I would actually caution against submerging citrine in saltwater. The reason for this is that salt can be rather harsh on crystals and cause them to break down over time.
Despite the fact that citrine is fairly hard, with a Mohs rating of 7.0, repeated exposure to saltwater isn’t going to do it any good.
Don’t reuse or mix citrine crystals in your cleaning bowl
Although it might seem wasteful and less efficient, you really don’t want to have too many citrine crystals in your cleansing water at once.
You need to have ample water in order to absorb and rehabilitate your stone. If you have too many crystals in one bowl, they just won’t get the treatment they need.
It’s also important to remember that each crystal has its own unique energy signature. So having too many in one bowl can create a confusing and chaotic energy field.
In short, it’s just better to cleanse your crystals one at a time.
Also, never reuse the same water for multiple stones. Likely the next stone you try to cleanse is going to be infused with all the negativities of the precious stones.
Avoid using harsh chemicals on citrine crystals
Although this is a tough stone, it won’t do well with any harsh chemicals. So avoid using any kind of cleaning solution that contains bleach or other harsh chemicals.
I would also advise that you limit the amount of time these stones spend in a swimming pool or hot tub as the chlorine or other chemicals can be very damaging.
Just like with salt water, it’s important to avoid any type of chemical exposure when cleansing your citrine crystals.
Never steam clean citrine crystals
As with many other types of rock, extreme changes in heat will eventually lead to cracks and fissures. So avoid using any kind of steam cleaner on your citrine crystals.
This also means that you shouldn’t wear your citrine necklace or ring when you visit a sauna or hammam. The extreme heat can cause irreparable damage to your crystals.
It might be fine for quite a few visits, but eventually, you will see it shatter under the strain of the heat.
Avoid placing your citrine crystals in direct sunlight
As I mentioned before, try not to leave your citrine crystal, or any similar crystal, in direct sunlight.
The UV rays can cause the crystal to fade and eventually lose its color altogether. If you do need to cleanse your citrine in sunlight, just make sure it’s not in direct sunlight and that you don’t leave it there for too long.

What is citrine made from?
Citrine is basically the yellow to brownish-red variety of the mineral Quartz, of which there are many crystals in popular use. It can be found in the same geological environments as smoky quartz and is often associated with it.
It’s a gemstone, most forms from heat treating Amethyst, though may also come from heating Smoky Quartz that comes out of certain localities. The physical properties are those of quartz, but it may be distinguished from topaz by its inferior hardness and from decolorized amethyst by its lack of reddish cast. Principal localities of occurrence are Brazil, Uruguay, the Urals, Scotland, and North Carolina.
Its cause of color is still under debate. Like smoky quartz, natural citrines pale when heated above 200-500°C and turn yellow again when irradiated (Lehmann, 1970), and they also slowly pale in UV light. This indicates the presence of color centers.
Some citrine is colored by aluminum-based and irradiation-induced color centers (what gives a crystal its hue) this is very similar to the ones found in smoky quartz. This means that transitions to smoky quartz (“smoky citrine”) exist, and many citrines show smoky phantoms.
Experts have found that there are at least two types of yellow color centers in the crystal that will change when heated. Since the yellow color centers are often more stable than the smoky color centers, some smoky quartz can be turned into citrine by careful heating. Natural citrine, as well as citrine produced by heating smoky quartz, is known to have dichroic properties (looks a different color from different directions) in polarized light.
The color of citrines is not simply caused by built-in trace elements, as has been suggested. Instead, it is likely that the color is caused by iron, as artificial crystals grown in an iron-bearing solution turn out orange.
However, the dichroic behavior of the lab-grown crystals differs from that in natural citrine, and the UV sensitivity of natural citrines indicates that the color is not simply caused by built-in trace elements.
Citrine is often found in the same geological environments as smoky quartz, and the two stones are often associated with each other. Unlike amethyst, citrine crystals may have a macro mosaic structure and can be quite large (meter-size crystals of good quality have been found in Minas Gerais, Brazil).
What is the meaning and history of citrine?
Humans have been obsessed with Citrine for quite a while now. Our history with this bright crystal goes back to 300 BC. The name “Citrine” comes from the Latin word “citrina” which means lemon. This is obviously because of its citrusy yellow color. Citrine was used in ancient times as a decorative jewel. It was even part of Aaron’s breastplate, which is mentioned in the Old Testament. For the Greeks, Citrine was considered a very beautiful and valuable gemstone. They even called it the “Sun Stone” because of its bright yellow color.
Citrine has always been popular with merchants and business people because it is said to bring good luck in financial matters. Over the years, many women have worn citrine jewelry as a sign of wealth and success. In the Victorian era, Citrine was a very popular gemstone among the upper class. Even the famed Queen Victoria loved wearing Citrine jewelry.
After being introduced to Europe, Citrine became a trendy gemstone in fashion and interior design. It was also popular during the Art Deco period which reigned in the inter-war period of the 20th century
